The Annual Richard O. and Cindy F. Connell Lecture Proudly presents...

Compromising Positions: Sex Scandals, Politics, and American Christianity with Dr. Leslie Dorrough Smith of Avila University

Americans consistently report that their politicians’ personal morality is an important sign of their ability to be a good leader.  This might appear to explain why politicians discovered in illicit sex are often forced to resign from office.  Yet how do we account for the fact that many politicians guilty of a sex scandal survive relatively unscathed, or even manage to avoid scandal at all? This lecture will discuss Dr. Leslie Dorrough Smith’s newest book, Compromising Positions: Sex Scandals, Politics, and American Christianity (Oxford, 2019). Smith discusses the gendered, raced, and religious dynamics that save some politicians and condemn others. More than just a story of sex, this is a story of ideas about American citizenship
